Mini Boutique

We are really excited to announce that we now have our very own JANIE CROW 'mini boutique' at Herts Crafts Collective in Radlett. We set up the stand on Thursday and even though it is pretty small we have managed to cram it full of bright and colourful things.

Our mini boutique is on the end wall and despite the fact that it is not even 2 meters wide we are really happy with the amount of things we will be able to do with the space. For now we have dressed the space with lots of crochet related stuff and there will be some of the workshop projects on show over the next few months. Our range of crochet hooks are in stock within the boutique and we have Holz and Stein knitting needle on sale at just £12.95 - £14.95 a pair.

We have some exciting workshops planned at the Craft Collective, including knitted fair isle, crochet with beads and freeform crochet. Below is a list of all the new workshops:

5th July: Beaded Crochet

This workshop will show you how to work beads into your crochet stitches to add a lovely bit of sparkle and excitement to your crochet projects. Beaded crochet is a really easy technique to master and this workshop will show you how to choose the right beads for your project, how to thread them onto your yarn and how to put beads into a double crochet and a treble crochet stitch. Jane will also show you how to make some beaded edgings and how to work from a chart.
Participants need to bring a simple sewing kit to include a knitters sewing needle and scissors and a 3mm & 3.5mm crochet hook. A notebook and pencil is also useful *

A small project kit containing Rowan Yarns and the beads needed to complete the project is included in the price of the workshop.
Skill Level: Participants should have a good knowledge of crochet stitches, terms and abbreviations

2nd August: Crochet Colour Work

This workshop will show you how to work with different colours of yarn in your crochet project. You will be shown how to change yarn shade neatly and efficiently, how to work the jacquard and intarsia methods and how to follow a charted design. Participants will also be shown how to sew and weave yarn ends in.
Participants need to bring a simple sewing kit to include a knitters sewing needle and scissors and a 3mm & 3.5mm crochet hook. Some stitch markers/holders would also be handy. A notebook and pencil is also useful *

A small project kit containing Rowan Yarns needed to complete the project is included in the price of the workshop.
Skill Level: Participants should have a good knowledge of crochet stitches, terms and abbreviations

21st September: Fun with Crochet - how to work in a freeform way!

This is a fun workshop aimed at anyone who wants to have fun with the craft of crochet! There will be no rules and no patterns to work from! Participants will be encouraged to play with stitch combinations to create a ‘freeform’ piece of 3D crochet, which could be used as a corsage, broach, key ring or bag charm.
Participants need to bring a simple sewing kit to include a knitters sewing needle and scissors and a selection of crochet hook sizes *
Jane will bring along a stash of yarns for participants to work with, and whilst this is provided within the workshop fee, it is beneficial for participants to bring along pieces from home, such as yarn oddments, ribbons, buttons and beads to use within their projects. Variegated and fashion yarns are especially effective when used in freeform crochet.

Skill Level: Participants should have a relatively good knowledge of crochet stitches, but do not need to know how to read a pattern or follow complicated instructions

9th November: Fairisle Knitting Techniques - small bag project

Fairisle is a historical knitting technique where 2 yarns are used in each row to create multi-coloured designs. Participants will be shown how to hold the yarn and avoid tangled threads. Jane will demonstrate how to work the single hand and two-handed methods. Tips will be given on how to weave and sew in yarn ends and how to achieve a neat and even tension. Participants will also be shown how to add beads into their knitted project.
Participants need to bring a simple sewing kit to include a knitters sewing needle and scissors and a pair of 3mm & 3.25mm knitting needles. A notebook and pencil is also useful *

Jane has designed a small fairisle and beaded knitted bag (which would make a great Christmas gift) which participants will work on during the workshop. The project kit, containing Rowan Yarns and beads, is included in the price of the workshop.

Skill Level: Participants should have a good knowledge of knitting stitches, terms and abbreviations

7th December: Crochet a Christmas Decoration

Come along for a fun festive day of crochet and make a last minute gift/decoration using some new crochet skills including beading and simple colour changing techniques. This is a good workshop for anyone who wants to learn how to read a simple crochet pattern and follow and easy chart. Participants will be shown how to add beads into a double crochet stitch and how to work in the round to create a lovely decoration which could hang on your Christmas tree or be used as the basis for a corsage.
Participants need to bring a simple sewing kit to include a knitters sewing needle and scissors and a 2.5, 3 & 3.5mm crochet hook. A notebook and pencil is also useful *

A small project kit containing Rowan Yarns needed to complete the project and the beads is included in the price of the workshop.
Skill Level: Participants should have a reasonable knowledge of crochet stitches

* please note: There will be a chance to borrow or purchase any equipment you don’t have, so please don’t go out and buy equipment especially.

Crochet Retreat - Last Day

Our week long retreat at La Verderie was over far too quickly and within no time it was our last full day. On Friday we drove out to visit a local chateaux after a quick trip to buy lovely french things in the local supermarket.

The weather improved as the day progressed and we were able to sit outside for the afternoon while everyone spent the last few hours working on their holiday projects. The crochet pieces the participants produced were just lovely - the colour combinations of yarn and beads were really great and it was a joy to watch their skills develop.

It was a great week and we had the most relaxing time and so as always it was sad to have to pack our bags and return home. Sue cooked a lovely Chicken Tangine and we all sat in the garden for our final meal together. Next year's crochet retreat (with me) is already fully booked, but there are still some places free for the workshop Debbie Abrahams and myself will be tutoring out in France in September. Check out Sue's web site for more information

Knit & Crochet Retreat - Day three & four

Yesterday the weather was bright and cheery so we set off to visit the market at St Jean D'Angely. It was a really lovely morning, browsing the stalls and admiring all the fresh produce. Sue bought fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood - including oysters for lunch and we had a nice coffee in the square before returning home.

In the afternoon we sat and crocheted in the garden, then enjoyed a lovely dinner of paella for dinner in the garden.

This morning we awoke to a thunderstorm and lots of rain so we spent the day in the studio working through our projects. Sue and Christine have chosen to work on a cushion cover design and Hannah is making a beaded crochet hook wrap. All the projects are looking lovely!

This evening we visited a local Cognac distillery and sampled both Cognac and Pineau - a local sweet sherry type of drink - which we all agreed was lovely!

Tonight we had another lovely meal of seafood spaghetti and after our tiring day we have all haeded off for an early night!

La Verderie - Day Two

The weather is not being all that kind to us out here in the South West of France, but the food, wine, company and itinerary is very definitely making up for it!

After a hearty breakfast this morning we set off for Saintes - a lovely town about 20 minutes drive away. We visited a fantastic haberdashery shop which had an array of fabrics and loads of accessories and books. Sue bought a couple of lovely stitching and crochet books which have some great ideas in. Some images from the one which I am particularly keen on are pictured below:

We wandered about 'Maisons Du Monde' which is one of my most favourite interiors shops - it always has some lovely bits and bobs which I cat resist - today I bought some tropical plant leaf table mats (as you do) with the hope that I will crochet some tropical flower motifs to decorate the kitchen table - If I ever get round to doing this I will post the images on here!

We visited the remains of the Roman ampitheatre and had coffee in the sunshine before heading back to the house for a lovely lunch.

This afternoon was spent crocheting again and this in turn was followed by yet another lovely dinner! I'm feeling totally spoiled and relaxed beyond compare, the only downside is that the days are flying past so quickly!

The weather forecast promises sun tomorrow....

La Verderie June 13 Day One

I am back in France with Sue and John Culligan and their lovely golden retriever Bebop for another knit and crochet retreat. Whilst the weather hasn't been particularly kind today we have had a lovely first day crocheting in the studio surrounded by the sounds of the French countryside, including cockerels, cuckoos and barking dogs!

Most of us have worked on beaded pin wheel stitch today - the combination of the lovely Debbie Abrahams beads and the gorgeous colours from the Rowan range of Cotton Glace makes this stitch so much fun - but we all learnt pretty quickly how important it is to concentrate!

Sue has a new roomy studio which has plenty of natural light making it the perfect surrounding for knitting and crocheting. This evening we were treated to some sunshine in the garden. The image below shows retreat participants Hannah, Christine and Sue enjoying an aperitif in the early evening sun.

As always the food has been amazing - a light lunch of salad nicoise, cheese and fruit was followed tonight by a roasted pepper starter, a chicken and sausage casserole for main course and a scrumptious pudding of home made cheesecake. As always the wine has been flowing and we are all relaxing into what promises to be a great week.

Repeat Rows 17-24 until you reach the desired length.

Last 10 rows: K across.

Sewing:
Do not sew the fabric onto the K edging along the blanket. The K edging will be folded over later to hide the rough fabric edge.

Lay the fabric, right side facing up, on top of the wrong side of the knitted blanket and attach using safety pins. Using a sewing needle and thread the same color as the yarn, sew the fabric onto the wrong side of the blanket. The seam should be inside the edging where the repeating pattern begins.

Sew diagonal lines across the blanket, 10 inches apart from each other. This will keep the fabric attached to the knitted blanket, even in the center. The thread you use should be thin enough that the lines will not be visible.

Fold over the knit edge along the top first, safety pinning it down. Sew the knit border to the blanket. Fold the knit edge along the side of the blanket next, being sure to fold it over the top edge just sewed down. Sew the knit border to the blanket. Repeat for the bottom edge and other side edge.

Viola! Edging complete.
